It's just normal protocol. You shouldn't be worried. BUT -- All they need is the originating bank name and the state in which the account was originated to get the routing number. With all the bank turnover lately, I am sure they just wanted to clarify your account number to make sure the routing number was accurate.

Never give that number to anyone who isn't *employer *bank (in person, not telephone) *IRS Your situation is probably ok, but do guard that number, it is the path to identity theft. Decades ago, I was asked that number to rent a VCR movie, I shudder at that memory.

The fear as a rule is when someone calls you and asks for information. You made the call you know who you called.
