I never considered the guy a wimp. You don't take on the Clinton political machine and the Republican Party and win by being a limp-wristed Pollyanna. I'd guess those who were making the charge wouldn't change their tune if he flew over and captured the Al Qaeda leadership single-handedly. Their minds are already made up. They can't risk getting confused by facts.

My understanding is that he had nothing to do with that decision. It was the on-scene commander who made the call.
