  • Well, it appears so and more. It is not just the terrorists but very hard line muslim states that are giving support to the ICU. Not everyone appoves of the Americans stepping in.
  • They all get what they can from America and then stand against the American ways. Thugs all of them as I see it.
  • Entirely agreed. But it goes along with decades of US policy of supporting anybody who would attack a government which the US didn't like without asking questions. Hence the US support for sundry appalling right-wing dictatorships across the world. Somalia is just another instance, albeit a particularly appalling one, of the same thing. This is symptomatic of a US view, based IMO on Hollywood and its ilk, that there is a "right answer" for every problem. In this case, that there exists somewhere a "perfect government" for a country which will be recognized by both its people and the US as what the country needs. If the US keeps knocking down the "black hats", then eventually the only one left standing is this "white hat", which the US can install and then return home to the sound the them music swelling up and the credits rolling. In the real world there are lots of gray hats, there is not enough light to see what colour the hats are anyway, and they are all friends with each other so each time you knock one down all the other hats get a shade darker. But the US still carries on knocking them down.
  • Our methods of controlling other governments have proven very ineffective.
  • Something interesting i read yesterday is that the Somali pirates began as an impromptu Somali coast guard of sorts because when the government there broke down western nations began heavily and openly way over fishing the waters there and once the fish stocks were depleted it was used as a toxic dump poisoning and killing people who live on the coast and who depended on the sea for food. Once they demanded ransoms the west cried foul and placed all the blame at the feet of so called Islamic terrorists and of course demonized the so called pirates. I have no way to verify the claims, but I have little doubts that this very well could be the root of all of it. Once it was found out the "pirates" were succeeding in getting attention ICU and other groups muscled in on that action and here we are. Right now Somalia needs some form of stable government and not one of brutal dictatorship. If the US is so damned interested in spreading democracy in the region then why not Somalia as well as Iraq and Afghanistan? Is there some need for an open area where no government can tell the US what they can and can't do? Maybe it is the US in need of a "safe haven" as well. I don't know, but something sure stinks there and it isn't just the fish.
