Living dangerously in a sort of "russian roulette" manner if you will permit me to use another idiom. Doing something dangerous knowing how dangerous it is and perhaps expecting to fail or get hurt. "Playing with fire" is another close one though "running with scissors" seems to imply behaving in a consciously self-endangering manner. Hope that helps.
