Why not? I was a Master Seaman. Are you asking why someone wouldn't want to become an Officer? In my case, I didn't finish University and even if I had, I still wouldn't have wanted to go that route. I enjoyed actually working for my pay.

In my army you get double the pay of a private soldier when you get 2 stripes (Corporal.) As such you are at the bottom of the pecking order, and you have to execute orders that filter down from the top brass and get the men to carry out those orders. There's nothing in but the money. But if you are a sergeant (3 stripes)you just give orders to the corporals, and you have access to the sergeant' mess. But your pay increase is only 20% more than a corporal. Still, life is much easier.

I am an NCO...and have been for 9 years....i love every minute of it...training people, getting dirty with them, etc....there isnt a McDonalds manager that would ever do that for his/her employees....;)
