I buy a lot of books from charity shops. If there is something specific that I want though, I will treat myself and visit a proper bookshop.

Used book stores, mostly, or some large bookstores- Seattle and Portland have some very large independent bookstores that are as large as some of the Barnes and Nobles, Borders, etc. I also do a LOT of library-ing. I get a lot of my books from the library. I request them, they go in a queue, the library notifies me when they're ready to be picked up, and if I don't get there right away, it's fine because they hold them 9 days. Also, I just bought a Kindle which is NOT cheap but it's a fun thing.

There is a book store in my city called "Book Eddy" and it is the most fantastic bookstore I have ever heard of or been to. They are an antiquarian and rare book buyer/seller, and the shop is filled with strange and wonderful things: a true modern cabinet of curiosity! Two cats live in the store, and there is a victorian diving suit, a giant puffer fish, parts of a world war one plane, a plastic glow in the dark jesus, and dozens of other wonderful artifacts scattered among literally hundreds of thousands of books, most of them rare, first editions, and antique, but they also have a fine selection of newer books. And the prices are surprisingly very very fair!

I first check at Amazon to see if it comes as a used or new book other than their offering. Then I check on eBay. I choose the cheaper best quality I can get.
