  • I don't know. I think if someone goes through it themselves they might change their mind. It's a nightmare.
  • because the chemically balanced people believe everyone is chemically balanced. when the balance is out of whack, depression is a symptom, so chemicals...medication needs to be taken to be chemically balanced.
  • Because they have not had it themselves, or won't admit to having had it, they don't understand what it is like. There has always been a stigma attached to it and most probably there always will be one.
  • Because they have not educated themselves about depression, and/or they have not seen someone they love go through it.
  • Because it's an illness that can't be seen readily. Since it's mental, many people think you ought to be able to just "snap out of it."
  • Typically its because they dont know that there is an actual chemical imbalance. Since its mental they just assume you can just change your attitude and everything is alright.
  • People like to overestimate the power of will since it appears to be free to direct consciously, it can be easy to overlook how much influence the mind receives from the physical world.
