Michelangelo is important because his work represented the rebirth of the pursuit of art and culture in the Western World. As a premier artist of the Renaissance, Michelangelo produced works of complexity and beauty that were inspirational to other artists and to the common people. When people were inspired to have goals beyond mere subsistence, they invented and created their way out of the grimness of the Middle Ages.
