I suppose the meaning is to have a text we can read from, study and memorize that contains Gods’ inspired word and provide a handbook for living a decent life not focused on our own selfish needs but serving others.

The bible was written by a group of Jews to elevate the place of their people on this Earth. The new testament was written by a later group of elite Jews to conceal their obvious plans and to give the common people a role model (Jesus Christ) who encourages suffering, loving your enemies (so that people wouldn't fight back), turning the other cheek, giving up willpower and material things. It replaces true spirituality and encourages abstinence pleasurable things that make life as enjoyable as it was intended to be. It teaches people that we are all pieces of shit just because we are human. Seduction techniques for membership are hope in a better life after death and extreme fear of eternal punishment.

Every culture or religious group has a list of rules for the way those that follow them need to beleive, almost all are set in a sense or series of stories as illustrations of what happens when you follow the rules and what happens when you do not. Many of them also at least discuss the idea that the true beleivers should try to teach the non-beleivers the error of their ways.
