  • If someone can explain anything using words they and I understand, we have communication. What does it say about that person? It says he can communicate what he wants to communicate!
  • It says to me that they have not only got a good grasp of what they have explained but a good understanding of HOW to explain things. It may be that another person understands the idea more thoroughly but to be able to explain it to others is considerably more useful.
  • "Small, familiar words" to one person are someone else's impenetrable technical jargon. So if someone can explain an idea to you using words and terms that you consider concise and familiar, it means that the person understands you and probably understands the phenomenon he or she is trying to explain. It's not conclusive proof that the person understands what he or she is describing, but it is evidence of general perceptiveness, which could reasonably be taken as an indication of their credibility.
