It's always helpful to remember that the job of the Marines is to go into combat. Killing people is not a good way to clear your head, even if it's for a good cause. If it's travel he wants, you should remind him that military tours are a tad different than civilian ones. The transportation sucks, no one carries your luggage for you, the accommodations are worse than awful and it's hard to sightsee when you have to avoid getting your head blown off.

MANY a young person has went into the Military because they were despondant / depressed over things at home ... Maybe a personal relationship , may be finances , could be a place to live ect .... There is not much you can do EXCEPT to point out that he is not THINKING clearly right now ... Point out who all loves and cares about him ... then get a Marine / Boot Camp Tape and let him watch it ... Perhaps it will change his mind.

If he feels like he has nothing to live for in his current life, then chances are he won't have anything to live for in the Marines, either. For example, if he doesn't value the friends (like you) that he has now, then he probably won't value his friends in the Marines any more. If he isn't finding ways to serve his country and community now as a civilian (like by doing volunteer work) then he probably won't care about serving his country when he is in the Marines, either. So if he thinks that by joining the Marines he will suddenly gain some sort of meaning out of life, he is mistaken. It will just take him further away from his friends, family, and country.
