It's roots are far older than the nazi era, but I don't recall exactly the details. Check Wikipedia or Google it.

The swastika has other roots, but it is now so tied up with WWII and the rise of German fascism and the holocaust that all previous meanings are now rendered moot.

In Europe, the swastika will probably always be linked to the nazis. In India it's linked to Hinduism, although technically the "spiral" is going in the opposite direction.

... first found among things dating to Neolithic times, then used religiously in Dravidianism, then Hindu, then Buddhist, then one of several Ninja throwing star shapes ... then Nazi ...

It has its roots in Buddhism. I was watching a parade once, and there was this Chinese Buddhist float that had the "swastika" symbol plastered all over the sides. A lot of people, not knowing about the history of the swastika, thought this float was promoting Nazism, when in fact it is an ancient Oriental religious symbol. However, in Buddhism, the swastika is pointed to the left. The Nazi swastika points to the right. So all the Nazis did was that they stole the symbol from the Buddhists, and flipped it over.

It is an old Germanic rune, formerly used throughout Northern Europe. It was not taken from the Buddhists. It is said to represent Mjolnir (Thor's Hammer) flying after the God has thrown it. The Nazis corrupted many old Heathen symbols. In the UK, the Odinic Rite (a Heathen religious group) is trying to rehabilitate the symbol (which they call the Fylfot) so that they can use the symbol in their sacred rites without people misunderstanding its use.
