If you have severe allergies or breathing problems, you might breathe really hard during slight exertion, such as concentrating really hard. Slow down your speed reading and you won't get so out of breath.

Are you reading out loud? Because if you are, then there's your answer; your running out of breath because you are trying to read a lot as fast as you can out loud. Try to see if you are reading out loud or not, because you might be and not realize it (even if it is only a whisper).
