The local title office should be able to tell you if the title is clear. Take any and all available information about the vehicle and its current owner with you. For example: title number, vin number, license plate number, year, make, model, color, and the owner's name and address.

This information should be public knowledge, but you may have to provide certain information (ie. name, ss#, license#, address) and a reason for requesting the information. They may also charge a small fee for this service.

I would also check with the local Clerk of Courts to ensue that no liens are in process, or have been filed that do not specifically relate to that vehicle but that could affect its sale.

If the title office has a lien listed for the vehicle, it will not allow the transfer of the title. Make sure the title is clear before handing over any money.
