  • u, g, r, i and z are the standard SDSS filters which are commonly used for reference in optical astronomy. J, H, K bands are also well used near-IR band filters. B is also a fairly common filter, as is H-alpha. Elsewise, filters are described by their wavelength or the chemical they are tuned to detect.
