The definition I like for forgiveness is "to give up the right to punish". It's an interesting phrase: if someone hurts you, you have the RIGHT to see them punished. Justice allows it, if you will. To forgive is to voluntarily surrender that right.... within your own heart and mind, to cease to expect, demand, or pursue punishment for the offender. The main benefit that I see in forgiveness is that it frees the victim from spending more time and energy on something that has past. A secondary benefit is that forgiving opens up the possibility of reconciliation with the offender. The main drawback of forgiveness is that you lose the cheap high of self-righteous indignation.
