i guess facebook analyses the data you entered about yourself in your profile and displays ads according to what you wrote. for eg, if you live in england, it will search ads from england or selling to england. if you said you are a photographer, it will display ads relating to photography. and the list goes on.

I'm assuming you filled out a profile, told them what music you like, what you like to do, you maybe joined groups of specific interests... It's not hard for them to get information when you just hand it over to them. Even if you left your profile blank, they'd probably extrapolate based on your friends.

It uses information that you have posted onto your facebook profile - i.e. in your hobbies/interests section and in your favourite films/books. It also target market profiles you according to your submitted date of birth and your sex. Everytime you sign up for an application, you have agreed that your personal information and that of your friends can be used and passed on to the companies that provide the application, they can use the information as they wish because you have agreed for them to do so. This is how facebook and the application providers make their money, from advertising revenue.

Clear your facebook profile, clear your cookies and browsing history from your computer daily. That may help some.

YES!!! while you are on facebook, their computers can silently hack into yours and see what you have been doing online then display the appropriate ads in relation to that info. There is only one thing to do, don't go on facebook, instead call me directly and invite me over to stay with you and protect you from all harm. what is today?

That is the only really horrible thing about facebook is the info sharing with other companies. Unless you choose to not go on anymore unfortunately it will continue to happen.

It'sa ll part of the semantic web and it's linked to your cookies, temp files and redirects. Several sites link together to share info on users Google and Yahoo are the biggest. It would take too long to explain it all but if you prefer your privacy then use a browser like firefox or opera and download an anonymising plugin and give your cookies and temp files a regular flushing. Also get a decent host file to block all ad servers and Paraphishing sites. Other than that it's just profile related advertising

While many ad agencies target their ads, they don't always get it right. My FB ads include things I *do* like, such as Neal Stephenson and techno music, some stuff I am neutral towards, like real estate, and for some reason keeps popping up LGBT-related stuff like gay tours of London or Gay Pride t-shirts. I guess their profiling software can't handle a heterosexual who just happens to support gay rights and thus thinks I am gay despite being married to a woman. The only way to prevent this sort of information sharing effectively is to stay off the internet.
