I think it is a good idea for collectors! The dollar coin has proven to be a boon for those who collect but is not really servicable otherwise. I work in a school...and our caferteria lady deals with hundreds of dollars a day and rarely ever gets dollar coins. They simply do not get used that often...people hoard them (me, included).

I prefer the dollar bill. I got $8 dollars ($1 coins) from a stamp machine at the post office about 2 months ago and I still have it.

In England (where I am from) the smallest note we have £5 - which is about $10. We are looking at having a £5 coin as notes wear out quickly and therefore work out more expensive to produce. Machines here for sweets etc normally only take coins. Making them read notes is a lot more tricky and expensive. So I find it strange that you still have such a small denomination note. I also find it strange that all your notes are the same size. So I think a $1 coin is a good idea. Just a foreigners view. ....

I think the dollar coin COULD BE a good idea if they would re-design it so that it is not so much like a quarter. Look how useful the 1 pound coin has been in GB? But you can LOOK at that coin and know what it is. I think two-tone metal is very effective and could benefit the dollar coin. I know one of the arguements for this was that millions of vending machines would have to be retrofitted, but I think that is stupid.

I thought we already have a $1 coin with Sacagawea on it... why do they need to change it? How often have they changed the person on any of the other coins or bills? Why the need? Oh, I guess they are... here is the scheduled release dates: http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/$1coin/index.cfm?action=schedule

NO !!! Everyone except collectors hate them.. I ask for bills when a retailer tries to give them to me. Most retailers hate them too.. they don't fit in the cash drawer, they are expensive to deposit at the bank at a night drop they are not allowed without special handling, they are too heavy to carry around in your pocket and most people don't have coin purses that carry much change. They suck!! As for the vending machines, they already take $1, 5, 10 and 20 dollar bills, they would have to be refitted for the coins.

I look forward to the dollar coin and hope it takes better than other past dollar coins did. I have enough bills in my wallet that I hate having a stack of ones on top of it. I like the Canadian idea of the dollar coin and a two dollar bill. We have the same in the US, but don't use it the same.

I've worked in the US mint at the Denver and D.C. locations, and I can say that the dollar bill is more convenient to carry, but coins are always a great opportunity for investors, collectors, and they add a little variety that people enjoy. It's not like they're replacing the one dollar bill. A little secret, the US is planning to make a 3 dollar coin, and is proposing a 250 dollar coin made of pure gold and is strictly for investors and serious collectors.

Let us not forget the point of paper money. It weighs less than coins and is easier to transport. I guess I might have to start carrying around a bag for all this change I'll start to aquire. Goodbye wallet. No, wait. I'll need that, too. As long as the dollar bill doesn't leave circulation and get replaced by dollar coins. Hopefully this is going to be like the Sacagawea coin and be something that is not seen in large quantities. I have only seen one of those to this day as collectors gobbled those up quickly.

I'm Canadian, and don't like the idea of $1 and $2 coins, they get heavy in the pockets at the end of the day, and you always get them in your change. Most time $5 in change comes in 2x$2+$1 etc.. because many stores are conveniently short of $5 bills.
-
I prefer paper money. Many people hoard the coins which defeats the purpose. For me it's too heavy and can be confused with quarters.
-
yes, i love dollar coins. if someone trys to rob you you can throw them at the person, sort of an anti-theft thing.

It is my understanding that In God We Trust is missing from this new coin so No, I would never use a coin that was changed in this fundamental way without the public having input first. This is a radical departure from all previous curancy going back to the beginning of our country. Look at what has happened in the last 40 years in this country. Crime, child abuse, divorse, abortion, drug use all up when the balance of non believers to believers in this country started changing.

The problem with US dollar coins began when they replaced the old Silver Dollar with the Susan B. Anthony dollar. Ever since then, it has been mandated that any dollar coin work in machines designed for the SBA dollar. Thus, while the design and thickness has changed over time, the diameter has been the same... the same as the quarter. Personally, I prefer bills. They're much easier to carry.
-
Honestly I think both are a bad idea. Coins and Paper money are out. Everything should accept Debit/Credit. Much more convenient and easier to manage. I seriously do not carry any cash around with me.
-
I love dollar coins! There's nothing like putting your hand in your pocket and pulling out your change only to realize you've got four dollars. With the dollar coin, change is no longer change, it is money.

A lot of collectors like these and keep them out of circulation. I wish I had kept all the old ones.I don't see any negative. However, the most foolish thing is to keep making pennies. We should eliminate them cause the copper in them is worth more than 1 cent and that doesn't even include the cost to mint them.
