In deepwater drilling, they have to use a floating platform, with a GPS system, and a powerful computer controlling lots of ballast systems, to keep the platform as level and stable as possible. They tow the thing out there, and then slowly extend a lot of pipes, and a drillhead. Discovery Channel had a show where they talked about them a year or so ago.
