  • I've been through 2 direct hits by hurricanes when I lived in the Virginia Beach area. Hurricane Gracie in 1959 killed 12 people and kicked up 3 tornadoes. Isable was a direct hit in 2003, just as we were ready to close on the sale of our hose and leave. THe power was out for nearly a week. Lots of limbs to cut up and cart off, but fortunately our house survived and we were able to close on the sale about a week late.
  • Tornado in 1973. My mobile home was carried away as I watched from the highway
  • A tornado, in my small home town. It was disastrous,... nearly fifty homes and businesses destroyed and sixty odd casualties. Miraculously, only six deaths. It was in 1960. I was just a kid but it is etched in my mind. My family was lucky. We were just out of the main path. I remember the windows being sucked out of the house and a noise like a freight train. It was on a Saturday in early April. It had been a calm, quiet day until early afternoon when it began to rain. The thing formed so suddenly there was no warning. Many were out of town at the lake or visiting. That is why so few deaths. It was deathly still afterwards and the realization was gradual. I can still remember that eerie feeling. When the rain stopped and we went outside it seemed half the town was gone,..vanished into thin air.
  • Early 70's..we lived in Northridge, California. Massive earthquake. My son's preschool was closed, my work was in a threatened area (the Van Norman Dam was a worry..that it might break and flood the area). So my son and I went to where my husband worked..no one was working because his company was on the edge of the evacuation area..we all gathered around radios. I had permission to just go into my office building and get the checkbook and payroll records because I had to prepare payroll..I had a police escort in and out of the building. Scary few days. Bridges collapsed, people died.
  • Living in SoCal since 1951, I've participated in many earthquakes. No major damage. In 1962, on vacation in Connecticut, I just missed being involved in the tornado that hit Waterbury. In 2003, visiting my daughter in Texas, a tornado came through the area and blew the roof off of her garage. No one was hurt.
