I can't help feeling that most of the stuff being shown on the supposedly scientific TV channels like Discovery, National Geographic and so on have very little to do with science and everything to do with entertainment. How about a "science news" which is exactly like normal news except that it deals with the latest discoveries and inventions, or the progress being made throughout the world? How about some programs that describe things like quantum physics or string theory (simplified of course). . Instead we get programs about the different ways of blowing up a caravan or how to redecorate a motor cycle.

You can pretty much answer that by reading the credits. I have a great deal of respect for those channels. I think they do an excellent job researching subject matter. Though I don't know everything, the things I do know about have been right on the money whenever they have run a program on it, particularly medical programs.

They are as accurate as you'll get on any television channel or most articles. If it's something that isn't generally agreed upon in the scientific community they will say how its still a theory or has been proven.

Less and less. In the past people were interested in hard science and now they are only interested in "science-entertainment".
