  • Unfortunately, the best way is to buy a subscription at Ancestry.Com. It has the best records. SOME of the site is free, so go take a look. Ancestry owns genealogy.com, and you can look at SOME things there for free also -- but the sites are not alike, have different resources, have different message boards, and genealogy.com is a big pain in the neck to use. Also check out rootsweb.com. This site is ALSO owned by Ancestry now, but it is still free. Finally, check the good, free records at the site maintainted by the LDS Church (they maintain records for everyone, regardless of religion): http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/frameset_search.asp Good luck! :)
  • Ankhorite's answer is an excellent one, and gives you almost all the basics of getting started, so I won't try to add to the sources he gave you. I would like to just add one piece of advice, however. And it's something that probably all of us who research our family history have learned the hard way... from the beginning of your research, keep track of your sources. That is, if you found a piece of information from a Social Security Death Index, or a military record, or census, or from a family member's personal memories.. put the source with your information. It will save you a lot of time and effort and frustration as you get further along in your research. So keep good records, and become a member of all the major genealogy forums (ancestry.com, rootsweb, genforum, etc). Oh, and another very useful source (though it's still growing) is findagrave.com Good luck in your research :)
