Athena was one of the most revered and common gods in antiquity. She was the patron goddess of Athens. One of her many attributes was as the watcher of soldiers and heroes. During military service many of the soldiers worshipped her on a regular basis to insure a safe journey. Athena is by the side of Odysseus throughout his journey in the Odyssey.

Athena was definitely popular in Greek Mythology! She appears in many famous works of Greek drama, generally in order to make things right again. However, one must remember that Athens (her city) was the center of literature. Therefore, they might have been a little biased.
