  • Here are some random (not to sound like I am trying to use my name as a pun or something) musicians I picked just thinking. I like a lot of music that people hate, so you have to be pretty open minded to actually like a lot of it. =/ -Test Icicles (They broke up, but I still say the cd is worth it if you like them) -Lupe Fiasco (Not sure how lesser-known he is, but I don't really like hip-hop music, and I like him.) -The Sounds Of Animals Fighting (I don't know what they are genre-wise. Some kind of rock) -Jet Lag Gemini- I saw them live and their EP is really good and has a unique sound. Alternative rock with some pop undertones? I guess that's what they are, but I love 'em. -Meriwether- Another really good band I somehow ended up listening to. They're rock, too, but I don't know how to categorize rock as far as sub-genres as you may have figured out. =P You can probably find all of them by just searching them, but if not, I can find a link with a music player or something.
  • There is this rock band loved by Kurt Cobain. They are called The Meat Puppets. Lake of Fire is a cover originally done by them. There is this acoustic band called Belle and Sebastian. They are good. There are also The Moving Units, Gang Of Four, Beck, Modest Mouse, Wolfmother, The Good The Bad And The Queen, and the White Stripes have alot of good music. Enjoy!

  • I like a group called the Corrs, from Ireland, (UK). They're 3 sisters, and their brother, (Andrea Corr - lead vocals, Sharon Corr - violinvocals, Caroline Corr - drumsvocals, and Jim Corr -guitarkeyboards. You might NOT like them, but have a listen to them and see what you think. A lot of their music videosperformances are on youtube.com. Just type 'Corrs' in the search box. JamesD ;-)

  • I really like Ska music. Reel Big Fish, Might Be Giants are some good ones. Probably not THE best, but great nonetheless.
  • I always liked soul music. The music from Arista Records in the 60s and 70s are my favorites. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Platters, Hal Melvin and the Blue Notes, Marvin Gaye,Sly and the Family Stone are some artists who come to mind. They are not all necessarily on Arista Records but they are some of my favorites. I say Arista because Motown music was a little more R&B than soul and funk. I also like some modern contemporary Christian artists like Third Day, Mercy Me, Casting Crowns, and News Boys. I hope you can find something in these artists.
  • - Frida Hyvonen- A Swedish singer-songwriter that's kinda bluesy pop with a folk twist. - Eisley- An indie rock band that sort of reminds me of the band Sixpence None the Richer, whom I remember you saying you kind of liked once. - Antony & The Johnsons- A chamber pop group. I do not guarantee that you won't hate any of these.

  • We like Celtic and world music. SOmeone we really like very much is LOreen McKennitt, a singer/songwriter who travels the silk road and many other places all over Europe, Middle east and asia and then writes about those places. She also makes songs based on great literary works like Tennyson and others. The musicians who paly with her use every kind of instrument and can really rock out too. We just saw her live last month and it was incredible. We also like a lot of Indian music, with or without words. The soundtrack of Lagaan is our favorite.

  • -MC5. A very good example of early Hard Rock. -Midnight Oil. An Australian rock band with very catchy songs and poignant political lyrics. -Rezurex. A strange mix of Horror-Punk and '50s Swing and Roots Rock. -Geraldine Fibbers. Lo-Fi Alt-Country; a little hard on the ears at points, but very rewarding if you take the time to really listen. -Ali Farka Toure. He's been called the John Lee Hooker of Africa. -Bryan Ferry. Originally the force behind Roxy Music, he did a whole album of nothing but Dylan covers that really rocked my socks. -English Beat. A British New Wave band from the '80s with some infectiously energetic tunes under their belt. -XTC. Quite Beatles-esque. -Jonathan Richman and Modern Lovers. Remiscent of Talking Heads, but not quite as manic and bizzare. -Beck. His stuff is all over the board from Electronica to Blues to Hip Hop to atmospheric strings music, and all of it's good. -James McMurtry. A Country artist with good melodies and amazing lyrics. -John Prine Another true master of Country. -Cracker. One of the most underappreciated bands of the '90s. -Warren Zevon. A very good songwriter in the basic Rock vein. -Cat Power. Like many great musicians, she's nearly impossible to categorise, but she's an excellent songwriter, has done some unique covers of other people's songs, and her singing is a beautiful exercise in restraint. -Leo Kottke. Easily one of the best guitar players of the past half-century. I could come up -Tom Waits. This guy is a real master and a definite must-hear for anyone; he's done everything from Blues to Experimental Rock to Beat Poetry. I could come up with more, but you'd be busy for weeks just listening to these, so I'll stop here...
