  • Technically, according to the "PERFECT" (hahaha, yeah right) Engrish language, Choc-o-late has 3 syllables. Since the supposed second syllable, "O" isn't a silent letter one is supposed to pronounce it as a LONG "O". Actually, the silent "E" at the end of the word theoretically causes all vowels starting from the 2ND to last letter going backwards to be pronounced as a LONG vowel, stopping with a repeated vowel. For example: In this case CHOC-O-LATE, Starting with E>T>A (LONG) >L>O (LONG)>C>O (REPEAT "NOT LONG"). In another case: RE-LO-CATE, Starting with E>T>A (LONG)>C>O (LONG)>L>E (LONG)>R. Of course there are always exceptions. And just like the "I Before E" rule, it's usually broken. Blah blah blah, theory this theory that... I just say if you say CHALK-LIT go for it, it sounds like CHOC-O-LIT. But don't say TOM-AH-TOE, cause it DOESN'T sound like TOM-A(LONG)-TOE... <<(Hint)Rule broken!

  • Did you see the movie "Chocolat" with Johnny Depp? I believe it was pronounced cho co lat..it was dreamy. Cho co lat...heavenly. Chalk-lit, not so much. One is champagne (the former) the other is beer (the latter). How do I pronounce it? Usually chaw ka lit. What is correct? I guess any/all of the above. :)
