HFCS is slightly cheaper than sugar, mainly due to US subsidies for corn production. Also, as something that is naturally a liquid, it is easier to process in large factories. The health disadvantages of HFCS compared to sugar are somewhat a matter for debate. While it may be slightly worse for the consumer, the main problem is not with HFCS but with the taste that requires so much sweetener if either sort in many foods. Too much of either sugar or HFCS is bad for you; if HFCS is worse, it is only a tiny bit worse. The healthy option is not to have added sweeteners of any sort.

HFCS is made from corn and has the same caloric value per gram as cane or beet sugar (or any other carbohydrate, for that matter).
