Fortunately where I live, fresh veggies are still the least expensive food you can buy. I don't have a garden and I don't have green fingers either.

We have always grown a garden. There is nothing better to eat in the summer time than garden fresh tomatoes.

Well veggies and fruits are always so darn expensive so my family grows a million different plants from herbs to eggplants. My family is really big on hydroponics (growing plants in water) so we have lots of lettuce and tomatoes from that. I've also planted a number of fruit trees over the years and those have always bore a lot of fruit that you can sell as jam or dried.

I live in an agricultural area and buy fresh produce from a farmer that uses only organic methods. Getting it direct is much cheaper and the produce is much fresher. I have always had a small garden (organic) where I mostly plant things like tomatoes, peppers, squash, and other things that can be grown easily. I use methods where I use less water (mulching) and do very little work. I grab grass clippings and leaves from my neighbors to compost. I use drip hoses to save on watering. I do a lot of canning, which seems to be a forgotten practice. It may just be revived with the economy. I also have a food dehydrator to dry fruits and vegetables. Sometimes the farmers in my area let me pick over their orchards when their pickers have gone through. By then, the fruit is too ripe to market, but super delicious for me. I get it for free just for the asking. Not bad when cherries are going for $4 a pound or more in some areas. The season continues thru apricots, peaches, pears, and apples. Then I go out in the countryside to pick blackberries and other wild berries. Having a garden is a good idea but only if it is cost-effective. If you spend a lot of money on fertilizers, pesticides, water, and labor, it might not be worth it in the long run.I do very little work and use nothing chemical. Example:I just throw the whole tomato in the jars to can them and don't even bother peeling them. Having a garden is theraputic & good exercise. It's nice to be outdoors & play in the dirt. It's rewarding to put a seed in the ground, watch it grow, and pick the produce that you planted. Even if you don't have a large garden area, you might be able to find a small area to put a few plants in...somewhere. I don't know why people have lawns. First you water it. Then you mow it. Then you fertilize it. Then you mow it again. And water it. And try to get the weeds out. And mow it again....water, mow, water, mow, water, mow.... And people that throw out their grass clippings? That's gotta be the dumbest thing they could do. All those nutrients and moisture--they should leave it right there.

Poor boys like me have to. Good thing I've always lived on this farm.

Yes I grow my own, I have silverbeet cauli and pumpkin stawberries tomatoes and a plum tree. I plan on planting a few more. Its much cheaper then buying and more satisfying knowing that you grew it yourself :) We also have our own Milk and meat, I live on a farm..

Have been growing a garden for over 20 years now. I also get most of my meats from my father in law who raises his own.
