1. Jacob suffered for many years having lost his favourite wife at a young age, Joseph having been kidnapped and imprisoned for 22 years (as far as he knew, Joseph was dead)- yet he still managed to live out his last 17 years in complete serenity. 2. G-d prepares the cure before the illness. Joseph uprooted Egyptians from their homes to pay for food during the famine years. This made the host nation a little weaker, which helped mitigate the effects of the slavery that would follow. 3. Menasseh and Ephraim, who grew up in a foreign culture held firm to their family's beliefs- so much so that Jacob blessed his descendants to be like these two, rather than like the tribes who had grown up in the perfect setting of Canaan. Lesson: You can succeed anywhere, regardless of the circumstances. 4. Even when Jacob is upset at Simon and Levi he curses their anger, rather than cursing them. Lesson: Tackle the issue, not the person. 5. Judah's royal line will never disappear. 6. Jacob's funeral procession is joined by various leaders of nations. Lesson: A truly righteous person inspires all types of people- even without meeting them. 7. Joseph tells his brothers that, despite their bad intentions, G-d had a plan that brought good to the whole family in the end.
