What is the ingredient that is put in lip gloss that looks like glitter? Is it actually small pieces of metal or is it something else?

Generally glitter used for body products (Lip gloss, body lotion, etc) is made by painting a large sheet of paper or soft plastic with a non-toxic metallic paint of various colors and shredding it prior to mixing it into the product.
