  • This answer is about buying a guitar to learn with, but I put some info on what to look for in music - http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/2657984
  • find someone else that plays guitar and have them show you the basics, tuning, power chords.. get started with some extremely easy rock songs- nirvana, green day, ramones, play em over and over for about 2 months.. thats how i suggest you start.. after that is another question. if you have no one to jam with, check out youtube guitar lesson videos.. ive been learning quite a few songs on there lately.
  • Try tablature. It shows you how to make chords. Start with something easy, like AC/DC or Ramones. Ultimatetab.com
  • Buy an educational DVD or CD that gives you one on one lessons. Normally you get a book with that. I'd suggest you learn the basic chords like: A E D G C Em Dm B7 and so on. When you finished with that and you know how to handle yourself on the fret board you can look up some of your favorite songs on E-chords. I love that site! As a music teacher I can tell you that this would be your best option.
  • get a few lessons on basic theory first. anything else will hold you back later on.
