I think the humor behind the two sets of characters is different. Cheech and Chong were essentially making fun of drug-addled slackers, who are an easy target. I would compare them more to previous generation comics who portrayed drunks. Beevis and Butthead were more about the universal banality of being a young American male. Almost every guy can look at his own life and realize that, at one point, he WAS either Beevis or Butthead (or maybe both). It may have been for 15 minutes. It may have been for 5 years. But almost all of us were there at one point. My experience is that men enjoy B&B far more than women do. I believe the explanation is that men can laugh at their own inner B&B, while most women dated/married/were teased by B&B and have only resentment and disgust from the experience. . . .
