Fashion is not shallow at all. It is another way of expressing ourselves just as painting, writing, and drawing are. Not all fashion is done because they are only interested in surface appearances. A lot of people do it for themselves, not others opinions. I love fashion but I am by far no where close to a shallow minded person. I am an artist at heart and an art student, and fashion is just another outlet for my creativity.

Fashion TRENDS are shallow. Fashion is part of our life that we use to express ourselves.
-
Fashion is art. Fashion is sociologically significant, economically significant. It influences daily interaction. It makes up a huge portion of the economy. Fashion, no matter how shallow and unimportant we pretend it is, is a huge part of everyday life.
-
It creates jobs and distraction...for shallow people.

To show that I am willing to take a beating when and where I deserve it, this is where I made the initial response saying that the fashion industry is shallow. So feel free to rip my answer to shreds at http://www.answerbag.co.uk/a_view/5868416 (See! There ARE people on here that are willing to admit when they got it wrong!) ;)

I have no interest in fashion and I don't understand why people make such a big deal about it and spend so much money to be trendy.
-
It creates jobs and people enjoy doing it. People use their creativity to bring things anew. Just because people cannot control the minds of creative designers doesn't make them shallow.
-
It makes jobs I guess and lets people express their art of design. Other than that, it's just an excuse for people to say things like, "Ew, that was so last year..." lol.

The test for the significance of fashion is to compare it to other art. Are there signature pieces of fashion so unique and interesting that they remain part of our permanent culture? Like a painting from Picasso or a mural from Diego Rivera? Do we have a cultural heritage of fashion? If not, then I think fashion could be classified as shallow. I can't intelligently make that judgment since I don't know fashion well enough, but I think my criteria are reasonable.

Fashion is a form of expression. In some ways it is like an art...that you wear. It's about putting things together that mesh amazingly well. Everyone has a different fashion style, some of which are considered to be better than others. True fashion shows idividuality and creativity. People who follow another person's fashion is how a trend gets started. These fashion trends are shallow for everyone except the creator. Fashion does influence our society and culture. If you saw a forty year old walking down the streat wearing a backwards baseball cap and low, baggy jeans, you would say he has bad fashion sense; but, a younger, maybe sixteen year old, could be considered to have good fashion sense wearing the same outfit. Fashion varies for different age groups and cultures. In a way it is shallow that by not wearing what is "in fashion" a person can get made fun of. Fashion is however an art, but only for someone who makes the trends, not follows them.

It is a form of expression and like all forms of expression has elements that are good and last and elements that are trash and disappear. It would seem fashion has somewhat more of the latter than the former but I am not a fashion concious person so perhaps I am biased. A lot of what I see on the catwalk etc just seems so flash in the pan stuff that excites a few people in Paris and London etc and then disappears. Doesn't mean its bad per se I suppose. And all forms of art have their nadir (Simon Cowell I'm looking at you sir).

Just as lng as peole don't go around looking like slobs

I make it a point to say "to hell with fashion" and wear whatever I want. However, this can inspire as much judgment and curiosity as dressing fashionably. An interesting trap.

Fashion is a means to express individualism. It can give color to everyones personality, or not, if they're lousy at it. It's a spice for beauty and a savior for those who are not blessed. It gives life to many people and not just means to get by it.

I don't wear the new trends, but I find myself over the years dressing in accordance with my attitude. As a freshman in high school, I wore much more flashy clothes, and now I prefer earthy tones. I don't wear make up, and all those changes reflect how I've changed as a person. The same can be said about society as a whole. A century ago, women wearing pants without a dress was unacceptable, and now it's completely the norm. Although I disagree with following fashion trends, I believe fashion is important because it allows you and your society to express yourself. Like it or not, it is also a form of art.
