  • Ummm, I live in Virginia, so, an awful lot of the battles in the Revolutionary War (e.g., we won in Yorktown), the War of 1812, the Civil War (e.g., started in Bull Run and ended in Appomatox Courthouse) ... were fought here. I live not far from the town of Saltville. It, not surprisingly, held great deposits of salt. Well, back in the 1860s, salt was used to preserve foods (that's why my grandparents had salting houses I bet on their farms). As such, its supply was considered critical for the success of both the north and the south. Many battles were fought for control of this small town, changing hands frequently.
