  • Everything I have read and heard states you stay with the car, AND definatly the kids. Its easier to find you if you are in one place.
  • I'd value the safety of my children more than getting gas in my car
  • never leave your children! That shouldn't even have to be asked.
  • never run out of gas, a flat tire is unnexpected (sort of)but running out of gas is inexcusable. If you walk take the kids. If it is minus -30 blizzard conditions stay with the kids and the car. A winter survival kit would be nice, but then again so would a full tank.
  • You never leave the children, ever!!!!!! I have run out of gas. Luckily I was prepared. I keep a few gallons in a can, just in case!
  • Stay with your children. They are more important then the car, that can eventually get gas with help.
  • Stay in the car and stay with the kids. None of the answers mentions the cell phone. Call somebody to help you - a friend, or AAA.
  • If the children's other parent or another responsible adult is present, then it is permissable to leave, *if* conditions are not severe: bitter cold, extreme heat, heavy rain, and snow/ice should keep you in the car. If you do not know for sure how far away gasoline or other help is, or in which direction, it is better to stay with the car. If you're fleeing guerilla fighters or alien invaders, then the advice changes again, of course.
