I actually know this one. They were originally called Dachshund sausages (like the dog) and then one day a vendor at a baseball game did not want to keep yelling "Get your dachshund sausages here!!" So he shortened it to Hot Dog and it stuck. I learned this from a show on the food channel.

I believe it came about from the similarity of the body of a Basset Hound to a sausage. Some people still call Basset Hounds sausage dogs.
