    God commands it.

"8 ¶ Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
"9 Ye are acursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.
"10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
"11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.
"12 And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts."
    Malachi 3:8-12

God says that to not pay tithing is to rob Him. So, in order to be a "good" follower of God, you must pay tithing. It does not matter if you are a Jew or a Christian, if you accept Malachi as a prophet, then you must pay tithing.

    *********************
"Alatea: This is wrong. It's all God's money anyway! Tithing is the control by which Mormons decide if you are "temple worthy" or not."

Once again, Alatea shows her hypocrisy. She says that we don't follow the Bible, but when I quote a very clear passage from the Bible that supports our position she says that I am wrong. So, which is it, Alatea? Are we supposed to follow the Bible or not?

    *********************
"Alatea: What book/books are you using today to make your point? You have many books so which one is it today?"

So, you don't even recognize that Malachi is a book in the Bible. You condemn us for not following the Bible, but you don't even know what it says? Your credibility is getting even lower.

    *********************
"Anonymous: My husband makes $800 a month take home for a family of three. I don't work as I have a special needs child. If we paid a tithe we would lose our apartment. So we can never be good Christians until we have more money. I thought God was more accepting"

You should read the whole passage. God makes some pretty significant promises to those that pay their tithing. So, the question is, do you believe God or merely believe in Him?

Simply put, yes. Believers and non-believers will tell you why this is good, bad, necessary or whatever, but the flat answer is that you can not be considered a Mormon in good standing (a holder of a temple recommend) unless you tithe, no matter what your situation.

I agree with Glenn Bleylock. I don't think tithing determines if you're a "good" Mormon but it's still very important.

I am going to answer this with a question. Why does God need money?
Be honest with yourself... It's the mortals that run the church that need to live well and be paid for a service. That is why my church is wherever I kneel to pray. I don't need the middle man. My "tithings" go to the needy in my community. Aren't we trying to be good people be loving and helping our fellow man.
