Now, how to fix it.... Sure wish I had the answer to that one. I think a BIG mistake banks made was jumping to foreclosure on properties that have smaller mortgage balances owing without somehow trying to work out some sort of pay schedule for the owner. Which I feel would be a better solution than forcing the people out of their homes - especially if they had jobs and could pay SOMETHING against the mortgage. Now they are stuck with maintaining and paying taxes on thousands and thousands of empty homes. And that situation is definitely not helping in this crisis. (I'm talking about ordinary people in ordinary houses, not people who are in mansions that they could not afford in the first place.)
