And if you read how long it will take you to learn the tax law, then how long it will take for you to fill out the forms, you will head directly for a licensed tax professional! You will NOT pass go, you will NOT collect $200, BUT you will sleep easier at night knowing you've gotten the best help out there...remember I said "licensed" tax professional! If 'they' don't sign your tax return, they are NOT licensed!

If you go to a paid tax preparer, unless it's H/R B (You know who I mean), the first thing you ask is to see their PTIN (Preparers Tax Identification Number). Some companies don't require their preparers to have one. They use the PTIN of the franchise manager. This is technically legal, but it gives you no guarantees, and you're on your own at an audit. H/R B requires all tax preparers to attend mandatory training, testing, and refreshers every year. They have to have a PTIN in their own name, no exceptions.

Having a PTIN does not guarantee that the preparer has ANY education in the first place, any continuing education, a license, bond, and/or E&O insurance! You are better off to see a licensed tax professional: EA, CPA, or tax attorney. then you have something you can hang your hat on!
