  • I made my first solo flight at 6 years old. At least with flying, there is a system specificaly for unaccompanied minors - where they are escorted on to the plane and off again at the other end - and are handed directly into the care of a named adult. (I picked my 12 year old nephew up once from the airport and had to bting ID before they would let me have him!) So flying solo at 9 is really no problem. In this day and age, I would be concerned about train and bus though. Mind you, kids aged 9 do travel to and from school on their own - I have seen them in London hopping on and off the tube.. so is it really that much of a problem?
