• anonymous, there is a British proclivity, especially prominent in the working-class folk of the East End of London (as was) to refer to various objects by a word or phrase which sounds like the correct name but isn't. A telephone is referred to as 'the dog-and-bone', your feet (quite appropriately in some cases) are 'plates of meat', trousers = round-the-houses - which in the Cockney way of talking comes out something like 'rahnd-the-owses'. Quite why we do this I do not know, perhaps it was a device to convey hidden meanings to confederates in a public place. I never did see the point of it meself. I am sure you have similar language enrichments over there. Personally, I delight when I hear someone refer to the White Swan Public House ( for example) as 'the Mucky Duck', with a comfortable familiarity and lack of formality in expression. I think it endearing and amusing, but the rhyming slang - that I don't get.
