Question

Help answer this question below.

How long do you imagine it will take for something like the Holocaust or the repression of blacks in the US to die out from collective memory? Until the last person affected by it is dead or longer? The Black History debate got me wondering about this.

I hope it never dies out of collective memory. Those who forget the past, and fail to learn the lessons of it, are doomed to repeat it. I'd hate to see either atrocity happen again.

It is a matter of history, so it will probably never "die out." I am guessing the actual question you are searching for would be more than likely, When will we stop using our past as a crutch, and stand up and look to changing our future so that we don't repeat the past, learning from what happened back then?

I don't know... how long did it take the memory of the Crusades to die out? Or any other similar example? It shouldn't, ever, as long as any of our history remains intact. Why would it?

Well, if we use the "ripple on the pond" analogy, it will never disappear. Its repercussions will go on for ever.

It should never leave our memory but we shouldn't use it as an excuse to affect our actions today.
