To the suspects left or right. It refers to the memory or creative sides of the brain.

This theory has actually been proven false, but the theory is that if you look to your own left you are tapping into the creative side of your brain, not the memory. Of course, the police trick is to always accuse the suspect of lying and to provide some sort of validation as to why they "know" you are lying. This will cause the suspect to provide more info. If he or she is actually lying, the suspect will add more info to rehabilitate the lie. Of course, this often causes either more ambiguity (which confirms the lie) or provides some sliver of truth (which allows the cops to connect the dots). If the suspect was telling the truth, but not the whole truth, the suspect will now likely give more information.
