Firstly, thank you for pointing out that McConkie was NOT an Apostle at the time he wrote and published _Mormon Doctrine_. In fact, the Twelve found hundreds of doctrinal errors in the first edition. Secondly, one needs to understand damnation from an LdS perspective. To be damned means you cannot progress any further. Anyone not in the Celestial Kingdom is damned. Baptism by one holding authority (eg, an LdS) is a prerequisite for entering the Celestial Kingdom. In short, current Church teachings match that quote by McConkie, but would never word it that way - especially in mixed company.
