What kind of cable do I need to go from vcr to satellite receiver (direct tv), so that I can record on the vcr?

Most likely you will need an RCA cable. It's the wire with the 3 round connectors on each end. The connectors are yellow, white and red. There should be line out RCA connectors on the back of the receiver and line in RCA connectors on the back the VCR. Then set the VCR channel to LINE or INPUT1,2,3 ect. Hit record and you should be good to go.
