  • I live in Virginia, and we have tornadoes here pretty frequently. The region that's known as "tornado alley" is simply called that because there is a higher concentration of that type of weather activity there, it doesn't mean that it's the only place where tornadoes occur.
  • Tornadoes are most common in that area due to geographical layout, but they are not uncommon in other parts of the country. Anywhere storm conditions are favorable a tornado can form. Flordia, Georgia, and Alabama all get their share of tornadoes.
  • Florida has more lightning strikes per square mile than any other place in the United States. Lightning is produced by high winds within a thunderstorm cause liquid and ice particles above the freezing level collide, and build up large electrical fields in the clouds. Once these electric fields become large enough, a giant "spark" occurs between them, like static electricity, reducing the charge separation.(Thank you, Dr. Roy Spencer) Thunderstorms that contain the strong winds needed to produce lightning can easily produce tornadoes. Texas has on the average 126 tornadoes per year, Oklahoma has 52, Kansas 47, and Florida 46. There is not a change - it's typical - the fourth highest amount in the country.
