The NT says that people should drink in moderation, and that wine can even be used for medicinal purposes. I doubt Jesus supported alcoholism, but he didn't seem to have problems with drinking in moderation. You must remember that people in the Middle East probably wouldn't try to get drunk, because they'd dehydrate very easily in desert climates. But in answer to your other question, I'm not sure what kind of wine it was. I'm hoping it was Lambrusco. :)

Alcoholic beverages are generally known to have health benefits in most cultures, and always have. It seems to me that for the most part, prohibition movements are a modern concern. I don't know how true some of them are, of course. Our bodies are very efficient at processing and removing alcohol from our systems, so obviously we're well-adapted for it. Among other things, wine is pretty sterile to drink, unlike water. So it's natural for someone in that time period to think it not only acceptable, but even healthy. Besides all that, it's pretty obvious why alcohol is popular in some spiritual rituals: it's mind- and mood-altering in perfectly harmless ways (at least in small doses).

It was red wine, not unlike a merlot. Is it true that a dyslexic Jesus would turn wine into water?
