I'd say play is still live. The baserunner can go back and touch the base, but only along the same path. The catcher can guard the plate and tag him as he comes back to touch the base. I am not certain about this, but it is my best guess, and I watch a lot of baseball.

At this point, no call. The runner is not safe because he didn't touch home plate and the runner is not out because he wasn't tagged with the ball or the hand that contained the ball. If the runner simply walks to his dugout and the defensive team doesn't attempt to tag the runner or appeal his missing homeplate then the run would score. (As strange as that seems.) I once lost it as a coach when one of my players missed home plate and casually walked to the dugout. The umpire called my runner out for missing the base when the defense didn't do anything to appeal. Thankfully, the base umpire knew the rules and they talked about the situation and it was overturned.
