I think he spent most of his life trying to figure out who he was and what is place in the world was. Most of the people he loved did not return it. His life's work of art was rejected in his own lifetime. His style was unique. He did not "draw" paintings out as was the popular realist style of the time. Most of the "successful" artists of his time are hardly known today.

he was obsessed about the way he saw him self. and because he wasnt changing fast enough he removed his own ear. at this point he was so self obsessed he had gone insane and started painting abstracts which were still all about him..
