One could say that every great work of art has a spiritual dimension. As such, it can be a substitute for religion, but it can also be used within the context of an established religion (almost all art before the Renaissance had religious functions). Many artists are deeply spiritual people, and one could say that art is their religion. This is such a fundamental fact that it need not be reflected upon consciously, and many artists would not think about it.
