Bling is a slang term for jewelery in general. Usually refers to diamonds specifically though.

I always thought bling was meant as a word for the over-the-top, over priced jewelry that people with too much disposable cash buy. Wouldn't be the first time I came up with a wrong definition for a word.

They offer 30 meanings, but the top two are most informative. bling 1 Jamaican slang that has been adopted by some African American rappers and inserted into popular culture. The term "Bling Bling" refers to the imaginary "sound" that is produced from light reflected by a diamond. See The Silvertones "Bling Bling Christmas" for the earliest known usage of the slang. This "bling bling" shit has been done to death. 2 flashy or gaudy jewelry, named for the sound generated when worn. "Oh shit I forgot my bling!"

This is what "bling" means to me...very expensive, vulgar in taste, flashy and cheap-looking, though very very very pricey. The rappers who have a mouthful of bling...the hot babe who drips "bling" everywhere and makes it a point to strut her stuff..the sports guy who wears bling in chains around his neck, his arms, dangling from his ears...that is bling. Excess, attention-getting, showoffs! :)
